Rainer Gruessner has built a career defined by consistent excellence and the never-ending pursuit of advancing the field of surgery and its related sciences. His accomplishments in the field of surgery are vast and diverse. He has achieved success on multiple levels across numerous platforms.

As former Chairman of the University of Arizona’s Department of Surgery, Rainer Gruessner has done much to advance the organization’s national reputation. He rebuilt the Department of Surgery by recruiting over 60 new faculty members including 6 nationally reputed division chiefs and establishing three new divisions in addition to various new clinical programs. He significantly increased the organization’s operating room case volumes and developed one of the largest islet transplant programs in the nation.

Rainer Gruessner is an active researcher and scholar, having authored over 300 published manuscripts, over 200 published articles, and two textbooks each over 670 pages long. His first textbook focused on transplantation of the pancreas and his second one on living donor organ transplantation.

Rainer Gruessner obtained his medical degree and his medical thesis (“summa cum laude”) from the Johannes Gutenberg University School of Medicine in Mainz, Germany, in 1983. He obtained his professorial thesis (“Habilitation”) from the Philipps University in Marburg, Germany, in 1991. Rainer Gruessner did his residency at the Johannes Gutenberg University before completing a 2-year fellowship in transplantation surgery at the University of Minnesota.

He also received additional clinical training in vascular, endocrine and general surgery at Philipps University in Germany, and in living donor liver transplantation at Kyoto University in Japan. He went on to become Chairman of the Department of Surgery at the University of Zurich and the University of Arizona. He has been in surgical leadership positions for over 15 years.When he is not hard at work researching or practicing surgery, he enjoy spending time with his wife, Angelika, and their two children who are both medical students.
