Dr. Rainer Gruessner’s Career Profile
Dr. Rainer Gruessner is was appointed Chairman of the Department of Surgery at the University of Arizona’s College of Medicine in 2007 and served as the Surgical Director of the Hepatopancreaticobiliary Center and Chef of Transplantation. Under his tenure, Dr. Gruessner transformed the University of Arizona’s Department of Surgery into one of the premier departments in the country.
He created numerous new clinics and programs and infused the entire department with talent. He recruited 70 new faculty members, six of whom leading surgeons in their fields who brought the department into the national spotlight.
Before his distinguished career at the University of Arizona began, Dr. Rainer Gruessner was a Professor of General and Transplant Surgery, the Vice-Chair of the Department of Surgery and the Vice-Chief of the Division of Transplantation at the University of Minnesota. During his time there, he developed a passion for creating minimally invasive surgery techniques that ensured his patients could leave the hospital quicker, cutting down on discomfort and medical costs significantly.
