Dr. Rainer Gruessner has proven his dedication and ability as a leader in surgery over his distinguished 30 year career. He worked his way to the head of the Department of Surgery at the University of Arizona.he has accomplished many “firsts” in general and transplantation surgery. He is a world renowned surgeon who is dedicated to perform life-saving procedures and to conduct innovative research. His field of expertise is primarily helping patients who have life-threatening disorders of the pancreas, liver, and bowel.
Dr. Rainer Gruessner was involved in the first split pancreatic transplant in 1988, performed the first preemptive living donor liver transplant in a child with oxalosis, performed the first ever laparoscopic living donor distal pancreatectomy and nephrectomy in 2000, and performed the first robot assisted complete pancreatectomy in 2012. All of these procedures are considered pioneering operations.
